Log files are an extremely valuable source of information. Besides simple details such as any errors that may be occurring with your site they also tell you who is visiting your site, how long they stayed, the route through the site they took, the browser they used and the site that directed them to yours.

If they arrived from a search engine the log files will also tell you the search term they used to find you. By regularly analysing this information you can adjust your site to better suit your users needs. Log files are presented in a fairly non-human friendly fashion so software is available that deciphers the raw data and presents it in easy to read format. The software then present the results as web pages which some hosts offer as part of their hosting packages. Popular software packages include Deepmetrix's software LiveStats, Webtrends from NetIQ, Clicktracks and Analog.

There are also ways to keep track of visitors to your website using techniques other than log analysis. Some companies offer scripts you can insert into your webpages that send information on your visitors to their servers, you can then view the statistics using your web browser. Some companies offering this service include 3Dstats and again, NetIQ with WebTrends Live.
